GENESIS 1:4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

“Light always trumps darkness. It always has, and it always will. Therefore... if you believe that your world is darkening...if you believe that the culture of your nation is growing dimmer by the year...don't blame it on the dark! Darkness is only doing what darkness does.

"If darkness is winning the battles, my friend, it is because light is not doing it's job. You are light. So wake up. Wake up.” ~ Andy Andrews

An overcast sky provides hope because there is light even if no sun is visible!

The initial period of Earths formation would have been a dark affair of coagulating dust and matter into a larger and larger object. Meteors, comets and other large asteroids up to the size of small planets were continually smacking into the infant planet that was to become Earth. Jupiter’s gravitational influence would have cause waves of influence that would have added to the mix. This was not an Earth as we know it, not close to that type of Earth. This was a much more savage, poisonous and cruel environment. A hell of earthly dimensions.

The impacts would have made that early earth very hot. Steam and not water would have enveloped the solid core of our planet. Not water alone though, there would have been ammonia, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and nitrogen as well. No oxygen at all!

The orbiting Earth would slowly have cleared its path by absorbing the objects in its way. Growing it would have started to take on a spherical shape and the actions would have started movement. Many people surmise a Mars size planet smacked into our Earth and knocked of a big piece to form our moon.

Do you know that the moon slows down our earth every year? According to NASA roughly every 100 years, the day gets about 1.4 milliseconds, or 1.4 thousandths of a second, longer. That’s why on June 30, 2012 an extra second was added to the year. Check it out, this is a fact!

This slowing has been going on for a while. There are other influences than the moon as well, but what this all shows is that our earth was spinning faster in it’s formative stages than now. Scientist have calculated that the Earths spin was probably about 8hours for a day in the early period of its creation. So it was moving about three times faster than currently.

Think about it!

  A dark earth with dim sunlight light glimmering through translucent gases and water vapour (steam) and spinning so that night and day are separated in 4hour cycles.

That’s a bit different to today!

Yet, light and darkness was separated. There were light and darkness cycles that had started.

Perhaps this is exactly what the bible is saying when it says, ”God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.”

Yet, I think the verse has two meanings. Light is good, and darkness is removed in the presence of light. Yet other verses in the bible suggest this was perhaps not the only thing God was communicating to us.

Jesus is called the light of the world. Evil is referred to as dark in many places in the bible.

Jesus when speaking to Saul (who was to become the great messenger of God) says;

‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. 16 ‘Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me.  I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them  to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ Acts 26 NIV

Jesus moved the world from darkness to light. He talks of Satan as darkness and God as light. We know Satan there during creation. We also know Satan was involved with the Earth.

It says of Satan, that evil one in Isaiah 14

12 How you have fallen from heaven,
    morning star, son of the dawn!
You have been cast down to the earth,

you who once laid low the nations!
13 You said in your heart,

“I will ascend to the heavens;
I will raise my throne

above the stars of God;
I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,

on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.
14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;
    I will make myself like the Most High.”

Also it says of Satan

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden,
    the garden of God;
every precious stone adorned you:

carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,

topaz, onyx and jasper,
    lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl.[a]
Your settings and mountings[b] were made of gold;

on the day you were created they were prepared.
14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,
    for so I ordained you.
You were on the holy mount of God;

you walked among the fiery stones.
15 You were blameless in your ways

from the day you were created

till wickedness was found in you.
16 Through your widespread trade

you were filled with violence,

and you sinned.
So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God,

and I expelled you, guardian cherub,

from among the fiery stones.
17 Your heart became proud
    on account of your beauty,
and you corrupted your wisdom

because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;

I made a spectacle of you before kings.
18 By your many sins and dishonest trade

you have desecrated your sanctuaries.
So I made a fire come out from you,

and it consumed you,
and I reduced you to ashes on the ground
    in the sight of all who were watching.

All this to say the conflict of the heavens was evidenced in the creation of the earth. Was God perhaps setting up the great rules of spiritual life in those early days of Earths formation? If Satan was in Eden, he was on Earth before men.

 Maybe it was more than just a separation of physical light and darkness, perhaps spiritual light and darkness had the ground rules of their separation spelt out at this time. Maybe the words; “God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.” had more than physical meaning those many years ago.

All we know is this was long before we existed. Scientists say it was somewhere between 4.5 and 4.8 billion years ago. (Time is more fuzzy when we go back in it)

What we do know is that God was preparing our earth a long time back.

Isn’t it amazing to see how God cared for us before we even existed?

GENESIS 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
Light of the world
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” ~ C.S.Lewis

The energy for life is almost all as a result of the sun that we see glowing in the sky each day.

It feeds the heat that keeps our world warm, it generates the photons that grow our vegetation and feed our animals, that feed us. The trees that grow, form wood for our homes, the insects and animals provide the biodiversity that populates our planet earth. When these organisms die and decay, some form oil, that generates the energy for moving us around.

The sun is important. It has about 99% of the mass in our solar system, the remaining 1% being in the planets around it.

The sun grew at the center of the nebula from which our solar system was formed. It was not there in the beginning, it came as a result of the gravitational forces generated by a movement in the particles of the nebula. Something caused the giant cloud of dust, water, and other particles to start to move. The movement caused some parts of that cloud to start to clump together and gravity started to pull the clouds components together. The center of gravity became the center of what was now a swirling cloud. (A similarity is found when we pull out a plug in bathwater. After a while the water starts to swirl around that drainage point doesn’t it)

Gravity smacked parts together fusing them into a large solid clump. This generated heat and more and more stuff piled in. Then the fusion reached a point that this collapse under its own weight gave way to nuclear ignition of hydrogen into helium, a fusion reaction that generates huge amounts of energy. The sun lit up!

Fortunately for us not everything fell into that sun. There was enough dust still swirling around that planets continued formation.

Our sun is also very importantly not a first generation star, in other words, it was not there at the beginning, but occurred later. That’s why we have things like iron on our world. Our solar system needed these elements to have been created in first and second generation stars.

We can think of stars as factories creating elements. Early stars combine early elements (hydrogen and helium) into more sophisticated ones. This is called stellar nucleosynthesis. Elements lighter than iron are established when low mass stars eject their outer envelope before they collapse to form white dwarfs.

Supernova nucleosynthesis that occurs in exploding stars that fuse carbon and oxygen is considered responsible for the abundances of many of the other elements.

The nebula that formed our sun was constructed of many of the remnants from these other star activities.

Now what is important is that we understand that God said “let there be light”.

Between verses 2 and 3 in Genesis, the perspective changes from a universal to the earth based perspective.

These words…”Let there be light” reflect the perspective of an observer from a newly forming Earth. (There was nothing living on earth yet).

So the newly formed sun was penetrating the haze of dusts and noxious gases of Earth, so that a gleam of light could be seen on the surface of our immature Earth.

The light that created our universe had established the light of our galaxy, and this was forming the first light of Earth.

Science says this happened by chance.

My perspective is that if God exists (and I contend he does), then God established all the laws of science that led to this successful first light forming. It couldn’t happen only by chance, it needed Godly planning and tuning.

You may disagree, but then, you have still to meet God as I have.

My prayer is that you will!
